News: Galicia wins the 6th La Cala Resort Junior Masters

Galicia has been proclaimed the winning representative team of the 6th La Cala Resort Junior Masters. Inclement weather necessitated that the final result was based on the scores from the opening day. Galicia have now won the trophy three times, equalling that achieved by the Andalucia region.

This prestigious competition is played on the 3rd and 4th January each year. The format comprises 36 hole medal play, with each team comprising the best four junior players (two boys plus two girls) from each region, with the best three from four scores counting each day.

This year, played on Campo Asia, golfing federations from Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Castilla Y León, Extremadura, Galicia and Valencia were represented, entering teams eager to participate in a tournament which is becoming more important each year.

José Luis Catoira, captain of the winning team of Mandy Goyos, Gabriel Alonso, Alvaro Veiga and Barbara Castro, commented: "For us we derive great satisfaction to return each year to La Cala Resort to take part in this competition. The level of the participants this year has been the highest, and thus gives greater value to our victory. I would like to thank La Cala Resort and the Real Andalusian Federation of Golf for the magnificent organization of the event. José Luis praised also the great play of his team, one of whom, Mandy Goyos, not only achieved the best individual result from among all the participants with a round of 70, but also becomes the only player who has obtained the La Cala Resort Junior Master´s title three times, beating the records of two of current stars such as Azahara Muñoz and Belén Mozo.

The principal referee of the championship D. Alberto Bueno, emphasized the importance of such a high level competition at La Cala Resort. Held early in the year, it provides these highly promising girls and boys the opportunity to compete with the best in their category.

The awards ceremony was presided over by Dª Fuensanta Lima, councillor of Tourism for Mijas, who emphasized the efforts that the municipality had carried with respect to the promotion of golf at all levels, with a special mention of the facilities at La Cala Resort, one of the leading resorts of Europe.

La Cala Resort continues its promotion of youth and junior golf, not only with this event, but with the organization of the Costa del Sol U-25 Amateur Open in February this year, and the Royal Spanish Golf Federation’s International Lady-Junior Championship to be held in May on Campo America.
