The results at the top of the Mens Section have not changed much during July. Chris Slattery continues to lead the field with a 35.67 average and Les Wicks remains in 2nd with 34.67. Alan Jewett is now in 3rd with a 34.0 average with Mike Tait right behind with 33.92. Jack Perry has jumped up to 6th position with 33.42 after a couple of weeks in the prizes right behind a mostly idle Arthur O’Connor with 33.83. In the Ladies Section, Karen O’Connor has been passed by last years winner Carol Rees. Carol is at 34.75 and Karen has an average of 34.5 just ahead of Ritva and Val Wick at 34.08. Jenny Chesterton is next with 34.0. The final 2 months will certainly decide the final order!
The competition was held on Campo Asia on a warm day. While several teams scored well, no one could top the team of Verena Haas, John Youngs, Gordon Edwards, and Bill Field. They paired well and took the top prize.
This match play competition between mostly self-selected “Young” vs “Not so Young” was very one-sided with the “Young” team taking 7 of 8 matches. If played again, we may need to use larger print as many people hadn’t noticed they were signing up for a particular team!
Hazel Gilchrist with a net 71 and Alan Jewett with net 67. Hazel’s handicap dropped to 23.2 and Alan is down to 8.0. Both Hazel and Alan qualify for the Medal Winners’ Final on October 21st, 2014.
This year Agustin managed to find 18 willing staff to take on the eager list of members for the annual match play event. The shotgun start on Campo America began at 3:15 to allow the staff to complete their work for the day before playing against the members. In addition to the match play, Borja Mariscal, one of the professionals from the La Cala Academy, held a putting clinic for the staff that don’t yet play golf. This was enthusiastically received and we will have several “graduates” signing up to play in the next La Calamari Cup! After the hard fought matches everyone shared tapas and various beverages to celebrate the occasion on a beautiful evening at the club. And by the way, after 3 years of domination by the staff, the Members came through for the victory!
This golf competition rotates a “golden ball” worth double stableford points among the team members. Choosing the holes each person will have the golden ball is an important part of the game, and of course once chosen, good golf is really important! There were 8 teams in the event and the results varied widely! The team of Judi Lentelink, Mick Hall, Alan Jewett and guest Tom Welch led the way with 177 points accumulated with one of the highlights a holed shot by Tom from the 12th fairway on Europa from 130 yards for an eagle!
was held on a hot and windy day with 28 hardy men participating. The early concern was whether we would need to evacuate due to the fire across the dry river bed, but the fire team from Mijas were quick on the job and with the excellent work from the helicopter and fire teams they had it under control. The team event was extremely close at the top with only one point separating the first 3 teams.
Team Event (3 scores to count)
The closest to the pin was won by Gordon Edwards and the Long Drive went to “Wild” Bill Field
Twenty La Cala Lady Members and three guests had an extremely enjoyable social golf event playing an AM AM team competition combined with an individual Stableford. There was one 3-lady team and they were devastated to discover that the extra 20% added to handicap did not apply in the individual Stableford! Nice try Sonya! On Campo America, on perhaps the hottest day in July, Carol Rees, Val Penney, Val Wicks and Paula Lansdowne came first with 87 Stableford points closely followed by Sonya Foster, Marie Wilson and Veronique Hesen with 85 points. Seven ladies had Birdies, Jenny Chesterton had Nearest the Pin on hole 16 and also best Individual Stableford with 39 points. Everyone enjoyed cooling off with a cool drink and a delicious salmon lunch. It was another successful Ladies Social Golf day, great company and camaraderie. Ladies, look out for the next one in August!
This competition is similar to a Texas Scramble in that after everyone drives (and each player has to contribute at least 4), the team selects the best drive and everyone plays from there. The difference is after selecting the drive, everyone plays their own ball and the best 2 stableford scores become the team score. There was some comfusion about whether it is possible to have a 2’s competition (it is) but most had a good time on the hot and sticky day. The team of Patrick Daly, Roy Davies, Bill Field and Damien Murphy distinguished themselves and won by 6 points – well done!
It was played on the 9th of July and our own Sonya Foster was the winner with 37 points! There were 15 ladies participating in the 1st Catefory from a variety of clubs around the area including Guadalmina, Guadalhorce, El Candado, Baviera and Parador. Other La Cala members were Kath O’Connor in 2nd with 34 (playing off +3) with 34 points and Carol Rees in 4th with 32 points. In the 2nd Category there were 27 Ladies, also from a variety of clubs and Susan Young from La Cala placed 4th with 33 points followed by 6 more La Cala Ladies in the top 20. Well done Ladies!
Is scheduled for September 6th. Start thinking of the guests you would like to invite for this new event. The format will be a 2 ball better ball with your guest as your partner. La Cala have offered a great price for guests of only 40 euros each (a 20% discount off the regular greenfee for September). If you don’t have a guest to invite, there will be separate prizes for members that pair up.
Though the Driving Range is closed for the upgrade and will reopen in September, the Academy, and the Par 3 course remain open for business.
… have advised the following planned course closures:
|04/08/2014 to 24/08/2014||America||Improvements|
|25/08/2014 to 31/08/2014||America||Solid Tining|

On Campo Asia, which will remain closed until early August, the team have been:
We encourage members to bring guests to play in members competitions both on a Tuesday and at weekends. Although no handicap evidence is required for member’s guests to compete for prizes in our weekend social competitions, we would remind members that they will need to have provided handicap evidence for their guests, to either the competition organiser or the handicap secretary (Arthur O’Connor), if they are to be eligible for prizes in Tuesday competitions.
Please remember to note what competitions you sign up for! Too often a competition organiser posts a start sheet and then gets a call cancelling because the person didn’t know they were on the list and have something else planned (or worse, just don’t show up!). There could be others wanting to play but think the competition is full, and of course the organisers job is greatly complicated.
We have a full field for this event (August 14th). Please contact Alan Jewett (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you would like to be on the Reserve List.
