Stableford League results are tightening up!

Chris Slattery leads the Men’s Section with an average of 34.58, while Les Wicks has narrowed the gap to a half point at 34.08!  To add to the intrigue, Les still has a couple of 29’s in his top 12 scores while Chris’ lowest score in his top 12 is 31.  In the Ladies Section, Ritva maintains her lead with an average of 34, with Karen O’Connor right behind at 33.75.  Karen still has a 27 in her calculation where Ritva’s lowest score in her top 12 is 32.  Carol Rees, last years champion is also joining the fray at 33.5 along with Val Wicks at 32.5.  This could get very interesting in the next couple of months!

The Waltz

It was a beautiful day with a late start at noon due to the Under 16’s Competition.  After the round, though we didn’t have prize giving or announcements, nearly everyone came in for a drink and stayed to socialize with other members.  The winning team of Alan Jewett, Louis Lentelink, Val Wicks and Maddie Brooks came in with 94 points.

Former Captains Open

The format this year was a Texas Scramble and many of the former Captain’s turned out to lead their teams on another day of excellent weather.  Carol Rees lead her team of Jill Davis, David Moody and guest Chris Hanson to victory with a score of 56.4.

The Mens Captain’s Away Trip to Almenara on May 14th and 15th clearly identified the best wind player!

High winds made for challenging conditions and Francisco Cervilla showed his skills even though he had rental clubs, borrowed balls, tees, gloves, and hat due to a door malfunction at his office!  His 33 points on the first day put him solidly in the lead and he followed it up with the best score (31) for the second day distancing him from next best Chris Slattery by 7 shots.  As you can tell by the scores the wind was a major factor!

…the Mice played on Campo America!  Carol Rees, Connie Maphar and Pearl Fisher were the winners on the day with 93 points and then 25 Ladies had drinks and a superb array of food at Wendy’s.  The Ladies Social Golf day is organised by a different volunteer each month to encourage as many ladies as possible of all levels to join club competitions and everyone is made very welcome.  Should anyone wish to volunteer, information and advice is readily available from the Lady Vice Captain, Sonya Foster.

The overall winner was 10 year old Baily Tucker with 38 points playing off an 11 handicap!  Baily not only played magnificent golf but he did an admirable job with his winner’s speech thanking his mom, coach and other key people that have helped in his golfing career to date!

The third round of the Circuito Femenino

It was played at Islantilla Golf near Huelva on May 22nd  and despite a 53 kmh wind on arrival for a practice round, Carol, Connie, Sonya and Jenny were only slightly daunted by the course! They played well enough on the next calmer day to come in third place and second overall after the three rounds which means they have qualified for the finals at Mijas Golf on June 18th & 19th! We wish them lots of fantastic luck in the finals! They have all enjoyed the experience very much and will have played on great courses for a great price.

The Summer Mixed Interclub Matches

It started the 30th of May at Atalaya Golf Club where a team of 12 golfers representing La Cala played against five other clubs. With four of the six pairs scores counting for the team score, La Cala are currently second in the league having amassed 147 points, only beaten by the home side who scored 155 points.  The best pairs score from all the clubs was achieved by our own George Kirk and Cecelia Massey with 43 points!  They were well supported by Johan and Ria van Wershoven who scored 37 points.  The next match in this series is at Guadalmina on the 13th June.

Peter Stock Memorial Week was a big success.

The week began with the Peter Stock Memorial Texas Scramble and as per tradition everyone came away a winner. The team of Sonya Foster, Peter Penney, Iain Macaulay and Simon Rivers had a great score of 54.9 to claim 1st place.  In the Peter Stock Memorial Individual Stableford David Moody won the Men’s section with a spectacular 41 points while Rosa Hatz was first in the Ladies Section with 36 points.  Well done to both!

The 2 day Peter Stock Better Ball competition really started on Tuesday when Jenny Chesterton started accepting initial bets on the various contenders.  Jenny showed a real flair for capturing the golfing pairs with her creative descriptions.  Chris Slattery was behind the book and was showing some signs of unease when the bets started rolling in for the Chesterton/Maphar team!  Fortunately for Chris and family no mortgages had to be taken out to cover the bets and in fact 280 euros were raised for Cudeca.  The first day scores on Europa were very good with David and Mary Evans coming in with 62 strokes and 4 other teams at 63.

The second day on America also had terrific scores with Arthur O’Connor and Roy Davies coming back from the dead with 61 strokes to take the best score for the second day.  David and Mary maintained their form and shot another 62 for a fantastic total of 124 to capture the trophy.  Second with a pair of 63’s was the team of Chris Slattery and David Moore (aka “Westham”).

In third, tied with Richard and Wendy Hinds at 131 but winning on handicap were Alan Jewett and Wendy Warren.  Taking first place for day 1 was Carol Rees and Bob Gordon (former Captains from 2005/6).  Chris Slattery also sponsored prizes for the best score for all the par 3’s during the 2 days.  Richard and Wendy Hinds beat out David and Mary on countback with only 20 strokes for the 10 par 3’s!  Wendy had a net 1 on the 16th of America to win the tie break and take the cava.

The overall winning team of David and Mary Evans were gracious with their thanks to the organisers and much cava was had by all!

Club Championships

As in previous years this 2 day event will be part of the Members Festival Week in October. The Club Championship will be a medal competition with stableford scores for the Stableford Championship calculated based on the gross scores for both days. In order to qualify for this competition, a member will need to have played in 4 Tuesday competitions during the year and be Spanish Federated.  Those not qualified are welcome and will play for a non-federated prize.

La Cala Golf Academy is bringing back the Wednesday Golf Clinics!

For more information about the 10 hour Evolution Package (it can be broken down into 30 minute lessons to take throughout the year) and the Wednesday Clinic please check out the posters on the notice board at the club or stop by the Academy.  The Evolution Package is one of the most popular courses and improves your game whatever the level you currently play at.  La Cala is also developing an official Academy webpage so all information will be readily available.
