The Club Championships
Played on Campo Asia on Tuesday and Campo America on Wednesday and if we thought Europa was in great shape we were blown away by Asia! The green staff have been working hard to improve the overall health of the greens throughout the past year and they were in fantastic condition.

On day one, there were a few good scores in the Men’s section with Alan Jewett and J.P. Karlsson leading the way with 76’s. In the Ladies section, Kath O’Connor lapped the field with a 4 under par 68. There were some excellent Stableford scores as well. Gordon Edwards and Les Wicks both scored 39 points to lead Category 1 while Mike Tunnell and Asbjorn Wangerūd lead Category 2 with 38 and 37 points respectively. The best Ladies Stableford scores were the 33 points scored by Karen O’Connor and Val Wicks.

On Day 2 on Campo America, J.P. Karlsson edged out defending Champion David Krajny by a stroke to take the Scratch Club Championship. The best scratch score on Day 2 was turned in by Alexey Vershinin – a sparkling 75! In the Ladies Scratch Championship Ursula Wetzel came from way back in the pack with 77 strokes to take the Ladies Scratch Championship for yet another year. Lucie Krajna was second in the Scratch. Kath O’Connor had another outstanding day with a 67 and easily captured the top prize for non-federated players with a 2 day total of 135 or -9! In the Stableford Championship, Les Wicks topped off a great year by taking the top prize with 77 total points over Gordon Edwards with 75. Third place went to David Rogers with 67 points. In Category 2, the top scorer was Mervyn Coombes with a great second day score of 41 points and 69 points total for the two days. Second was David Lansdowne with 66 and David Gilchrist with 65 points. Mike Tunnell easily topped the non-federated list with 79 total points for the two days. In the Ladies Stableford Championships, Karen O’Connor won the top prize with 72 total points beating out Val Wicks who scored 68 and Alison Kirk with 65 points for the two day event.

La Cala did another outstanding cocktail party with drinks and tapas before the prize giving on Wednesday evening. Agustin Alonso, who organised the Members Festival Week was on hand to give out some great prizes to the winners and then some terrific lucky draw items as well.

The Millenium Trophy
It is the 2 ball better ball played on Campo Asia on Friday of Members Festival Week. There were a few shocked faces when changes to handicaps, plus 90% of slope were applied! The course conditions were again fantastic with beautifully prepared greens running at excellent speed. The top team for the day was Christopher Park and Arthur O’Connor who scored 43 points and beat out Les Wicks and Bill Field on handicap. Vic and Pauline Hilliard were 3rd with 41 points closely followed by Roy and Jill Davies, David and Marie Wilson, and Andrew Park and Mike Tunnell all with 40 points. And finally with 39 points Alexey Vershinin and Frank Zelhius beat David Moody and Feri Deacon on handicap to complete the prizes.

Vinoteca Pura Cepa provided a wine tasting after the golf and La Cala added some cheese plates to end the week on another high note. Agustin announced the winners and presented them with prizes provided by Pura Cepa and La Cala. What a fantastic effort by the entire La Cala team for the Members Festival Week!

Local Rules

Following alterations that have recently been made to the staking on Europa and Asia it was necessary to update the Local Rules to reflect these changes. At the same time the committee have taken the opportunity to make a number of other changes to the Local Rules to improve clarity and also to create uniformity with the Open Competition Local Rules used by La Cala.

A full copy of the Local Rules can be found on the Members page of the website, and also on the Members notice board in the clubhouse, but the main changes are as follows:

  • Water Hazards. The rule now reflects the current staking.
  • Protection of Young Trees. La Cala confirm that there are now no young trees that need protection and it is not their intention to plant more trees in the foreseeable future. Consequently this local rule has been removed.
  • Immovable obstructions. Updated to align with La Cala Resort Open Competition local rules
  • Out of Bounds. This clearly identifies the stone wall and area to the right of 18 on Asia as out of bounds. The white stakes have now been removed and white marks painted on wall. This removes the ability for a player to obtain free relief from the wall when the ball comes to rest against it but inside the stakes that were previously marking the out of bounds.
  • Ground under repair. Now includes the ability to take free relief from rain damage channels in bunkers. This was previously provided under a temporary local rule which was required to be posted on the notice board for the times that it was in effect. This led to confusion amongst players but is now permanently covered under ground under repair. Additionally, full relief, rather than just from ‘lie of the ball’, as was the case under the previous local rules, is included for hog damage and gravel drains. The provision of full relief gives consistency with relief from all other GUR defined areas.
  • Temporary Local Rules. There is now only one, Preferred Lies (winter rules). It is felt that weather conditions on the Costa del Sol make it inappropriate for this temporary rule to be in place permanently from 1st October until 30th April as has been the case previously. In future the application of this rule will be indicated by a sign on the starters hut of each course

The Blue Tee Policy has been reviewed by the committee and for 2015 the minimum age has been reduced to 70 (from 75). Remember if you choose to play from the blues we ask that for the Knock Outs, Stableford League, and Medal competitions that a player remain consistent throughout the year. The committee have also agreed that for those players who choose to play from the blue tees on the weekends, when the yellow tees are in front of the blue blocks, the player can play from the forward yellow tees. Enjoy your golf!

Members who wish to invite guests to play in a members competition are more than welcome. Members may only introduce one guest each, into a member’s competition, without prior approval of the organiser, as competitions are usually fully supported by members. Once the organiser takes down the entry list, then late entry by anyone is dependent on spaces or additional tee times being available. When a guest is signed up for a particular competition, please confirm that they are your guest by writing (Guest) next to their name on the entry list. All non-members need to be signed in by a member and should arrange this before both parties write their name on the entry list (as above). This will help the competition organiser and the Pro Shop connect that member to their guest. It should be noted guests could only be accommodated if there are adequate numbers of tee times available.

We as a committee encourage all guests and past members to join in our competitions, as it is always good to meet past members again and to meet guests of other members. Perhaps, one day, we may see your guests playing here as regular members!

Thanks to all who provided trophies for Siga – Sight Impaired or physically handicapped Golfers Association. They are running their event on November 15th at the Par 3 Course at the Parador and many of you have provided them with old trophies so they can use them again for the kids!

The La Cala Website has been updated to reflect the new corporate branding. Following the changes a number of members have reported difficulties in accessing the members competition start sheets and results page on their smartphones. The access route for smartphones is slightly different than when being accessed on a computer or tablet and the following should assist:

Go to the website page in the normal way. Click on the ‘Menu Box’ in the top right hand corner. Scroll down and click on ‘Members La Cala Golf Club’. A similar screen to the first one appears and scroll down and click on the box ‘Members La Cala Golf Club Menu’. Scroll down and click on ‘Competitions’. Once again a similar screen to the initial one appears but scroll down and you will find the competitions listed below.
