Stableford League results are showing 2 individuals separating themselves from the field. Chris Slattery has been consistently excellent and has already achieved a higher average of 34.33 than the best scores from any of the previous years winners. Well done Chris! Les Wicks is the closest pursuer at 33.17. Ritva Hägglund is also a clear leader in the Ladies section with an average of 33.75 putting her well ahead of her nearest competitor, Lotta Syversen at 31.83. With almost 5 months to play it’s not too late to put together some outstanding scores to challenge Chris and Ritva!
The Men’s away day at Valle Romano on April 10th was a big hit. 23 men ventured out to the barren landscape of forgotten townhouses surrounding the beautiful Valle Romano course to take on the hazards and challenges of undulating greens. Arthur O’Connor was a clear first place with an outstanding 37 points followed by Gordon Edwards with 33. Not surprisingly the team of Arthur, Gordon, Richard Hinds and Paul O’Callaghan blew away the rest of the field with 112 points (next best team had just 101 points).
At the El Corte Ingles trophy on April 12th Jesus Domingues Lupiañez claimed first prize with 36 points in the Men’s section and Sally Ferguson with 32 points won the Ladies. Eric Catterson (31) and Carol Rees (31) were both second in their respective categories and will represent La Cala at the El Corte Ingles Andalucian finals at Guadalhorce on May 17th. The gift bag, tapas, and drinks were enjoyed by all on a very pleasant day of golf.
The St. George versus Dragon Match Play competition was held on April 13th with very competitive pairings. The St. George team lead by our able Vice Captain Brian Farmer were finally able to put their name on the trophy with a resounding 7 ½ to 6 ½ victory! Well done to the long suffering St. George’s!
The Ladies Social Golf day on March 27th was another successful day with 16 ladies playing an AM/AM. The team of Verena Haas, Pearl Fisher, Jenny Chesterton and Hazel Gilchrist won narrowly with 87 points. Anne Mills was the individual winner with 36 points and Verena Haas won nearest the pin.
On April 24th the Ladies Social Golf day drew 25 players and 31 for lunch for another AM/AM. Carol Rees, Anne Mills and Pearl Fisher scored 96 points to take first prize and Maggie Coombes, Thomasina Costello and Ria van Wershoven were second with 93 points. The individual stableford winner was Maggie Coombes scoring an outstanding 43 points! And of course, Wendy Hinds made a hole-in-one on the 8th hole of America!
The Ladies Social Golf day is organised by a different volunteer each month to encourage as many ladies as possible of all levels to join club competitions and everyone is made very welcome.
The second round of the Circuito Femenino was played at Guadalmina Golf Club on April 23rd. Our four players, Connie Maphar, Carol Rees, Sonya Foster and Jenny Chesterton enjoyed the lovely weather on an immaculate golf course which had some interesting hidden water hazards to contend with. Three individual scores from the four are taken into account and thanks to a superb 34 from Connie, who has never played Guadalmina before, we are pleased to report that we came 4th out of 16 with an aggregate score of 91. The third round will be played at Islantilla Golf near Huelva in May and the ladies hope that a good result will put them into the finals in June at Mijas Golf.
On Easter Sunday April 20th we had the Easter Rainbow Scramble where everyone on the team played from the same tee (6 holes from the red, 6 from the blue, 3 from the yellow and 3 from the white tees) for an entertaining day of golf. The team of Peter Hannam, John Mills, Gordon Edwards and Susanne Valentin played a spectacular round in less than wonderful conditions and easily won the competition. Only 6 groups out of 15 were brave enough (or foolish enough?) to finish the round and everyone came in dripping wet!
This has been the month for Holes in One! 5 incredible golfers have achieved this fantastic accomplishment in the last month: David Holden on Hole 17 of Asia with a 9 iron, Hilda Gottskalksdottir also on Hole 17 with a 6 iron (see picture below), Carol Rees on Hole 11 of America with a 7 wood, Asbjorn Wangerūd on Hole 3 of Asia with a 9 iron and Wendy Hinds on Hole 8 of America with a 5 wood (see picture below)! Well done to each of you and thank you for your celebratory drinks!
There are still opportunities to sponsor a hole for €50 for the Cudeca Cup on May 18th, if interested please contact Jenny Chesterton. Donations of raffle prizes and items for the Tombola stand would be very welcome and don’t forget to stop in Reservations to sign-up for the golf!
Many of you may remember David Bridger, our Head Marshall who retired 6 years ago. We are sad to report that he has passed away in April.
At the Academy you can now get your clubs regripped, repairs done and long game and short game lessons! Come up and see what improvements have been made to the training areas and the short course. If you´re struggling with your putting, the facility has recently taken receipt of a Sam Putt Lab, it´s a device that analyses the 28 most important parameters of your putting stroke and displays the results in easy to understand graphic reports. Vanessa or Tom will have details on the clinic and the price per session.
Rafa Linares and his green keeping team have advised that they have some additional work scheduled for the greens in the coming weeks. The principal activity involved is a process called hollow coring or tining. It´s a little aggressive, a good aggressive, in that the process aerates soil and removes the layer of thatch (dead humus matter) that can build up in the top soil. The team then top dress with sand to dilute thatch, restore surface levels and firmness, improve drainage and generally improve the overall quality of the root zone and leaf growth. It will mean however that it takes between 10 and 14 days for full recovery afterwards. They ask that the membership consider that this work is necessary if the greens are to continue to improve. Ideally this particular procedure happens twice a year.
