The results in the Mens Section are revealing a clear leader. Chris Slattery scored 41 points in early June and followed it up with a 35 point effort to distance himself (again) from the field. Les Wicks remains in second place but the gap has widened. Arthur O’Connor has continued his run of good form and is in 3rd place and may provide some drama before the end of the year. Jack Perry has put in some good scores during June and has now moved into at tie for 10th! In the Ladies Section, Karen O’Connor has made a strong move to the top of the rankings with a 34.17 average and now is just ahead of Ritva who has a 34 average. Carol Rees is in 3rd position with 33.5 followed by Val Wicks at 33.33. Everything to play for in the Ladies Section!
This event is a replacement for the Progressive Stableford recognizing that with our mini-shotgun start, many people end up starting on the back 9. When a team had to begin with 3 scores to count it was a difficult hurdle so now we “sandwich” 6 holes with 2 scores to count between 6 holes with 3 scores to count! The winning team of Roy Davies, Deirdre Whelan, Sorcha Whelan and Sean Jewett scored an outstanding 115 points (and thankfully no one was hurt in the single buggy crash on the 12th hole!).
The 2 Person Better Ball Stableford was played on Campo Europa in great weather and friendly spirit. The 2 ball team of James Reid and recently returning Kate Bradley with 48 points easily finished ahead of a pack of teams with 46 points to claim the first place prize.
Brian Farmer with a net 71 and Lina Zelley with net 67. Lina’s handicap has dropped to 33.1 and Brian is down to 13.4. Both Brian and Lina qualify for the Medal Winners’ Final on October 21st, 2014. Also of note, the first 4 ball for the Medal competition established what might be a new club record. The combined age was 330 years! Jack Perry, at the tender young age of 81, was the youngest and is now refered to as “Junior”!
It’s a new competition that requires at least one person in the group to have some math skills! The goal is to achieve the lowest total net stroke scores of 40 balls over 18 holes. Each player has to contribute 7 scores and at least one score has to count on each hole. After completion of each hole the team decides which scores will be part of the 40! Much confusion reigned and calculators and advice were needed by many but the team of Arthur O’Connor, Kate Bradley, Judi Lentelink and Erling Johnsen took the top prize with 135 (net) shots!
The La Cala team have played over half the matches in the Senior League this year and we are in the middle of the field in the results table. Arthur O’Connor was the Captain for the day for the La Siesta match and he impressed us all with his stirring speech in “Español”! The La Siesta group was very appreciative of his efforts. The La Cala team won all 3 matches at home on Campo America and managed to win one match at La Siesta to take the series 4 – 2.
The Ladies of La Cala recently grabbed 11 of the 12 available points in a match at Parador and are in the middle of the results table at the moment.
Were played at Mijas Golf on June 18th & 19th on the new Championship course – Los Lagos. The Lady Vice-Captain Sonya Foster had this to say: The first day proved to be a very good round and the team were lying in 4th place only four shots off the lead. Then on the second day what can I say! How are two days never the same in golf! I personally wanted to throw myself into one of the lakes after the 6th hole!! Sooooo frustrating! However that said we did very well. My other team mates Carol Rees, Jenny Chesterton and Connie Maphar played well. Carol was the most consistent and ended up with the same score on both days 34 & 34 – Well done Carol! We ended up in third place out of a field of 20 teams. The scores for the two day event were:-
If only we had put those last few putts in!!!
The Circuito Femenino is held during March, April, May and ends in June with the final event being held over two days. We will definitely consider playing again next year. It is great value for money at around €120 for the whole golfing event, and we get to travel up and down the coast playing different golf courses/clubs the Federation chooses for that year. If you would like to know more about this event visit the Federation website www.rfeg.org or ask any one of us who have participated in the competition. We really would love for more of the La Cala ladies to become involved in this competition as it is such good fun and we know you would really enjoy yourselves.
This competition for June was an AM/AM played on Campo Asia. Sunny skies were again the order of the day and a welcome change for those rained out on Tuesday! Three teams tied with 91 points and the winners on handicap were Sonya Foster, Roel Geers, Carol Rees, and Frank Zehlius.
Though the Driving Range is closed for the upgrade and will reopen in September, the Academy and the Par 3 course are open for business.
