Not much change at the top in the Mens Section with Les Wicks maintaining his position with a 35.83 average followed by Chris Slattery with 35.67. Arthur O’Connor is now 3rd with 35.25 and Mike Tait 4th with 35.08. In the Ladies section, Val Wicks has taken over the top spot in a very tight race with a 35.75 average followed closely by Jill Davies with 35.67, Karen O’Connor with 35.08 and Carol Rees at 35.0. Take a look at the Notice Board for the top 10 results in each section and see what each player has to beat to improve their average. Only one more Tuesday to try and post a good score! Last Stableford competition for the League will be October 14th.
On September 6th, it was also open to Members playing with Members and it seemed everyone had a good day. The weather cooled off slightly and there was a bit of breeze so the conditions were pleasant and the tee positions friendly. The better ball scores were generally good and it took at least 43 points to get into the prizes (top 8) but there were 5 teams tied on that score. The truly elite were the 45 points scored by Vice Captains Elect Vic and Pauline Hilliard, 48 points by Wendy Warren and her guest Pilar Andujar and the fantastic 50 points scored by Jill and Martin Hornsby!
Played on Campo Europa, it was another excellent golf day. Scores were very good, but none better than David Millar’s 39 points for the Men and Jill Davies also with 39 for the Ladies! For the Men, Arthur O’Connor was 2nd and Mike Tait 3rd, both with 37 points. And for the Ladies Val Wicks was 2nd and Hazel Gilchrist 3rd, also both with 37 points. Well done and congratulations to David and Jill for putting your names on the Honours Board!
It was held on Thursday September 11th on Campo Europa in beautiful conditions – warm, sunny, and just enough breeze to keep it comfortable! Later that evening La Cala hosted tapas and drinks for all the Property Owners. David Kelley welcomed new property owners and Pedro Batista handed out some very nice prizes including weekends away for the winners!
The results were:
Ladies Men Guests
Nearest to the pin on 10th hole was won by Thomasina Costello.
It was played on Saturday September 13th on Campo America in pleasant conditions – sunny and warm, but some breeze to keep it comfortable. Despite the alcohol consumed on the 7th tee, many teams held it together and played very well. Winning on handicap was the team of Jenny Chesterton, Judi Lentelink and Sean Jewett with 99 points, over the team of Roy Davies, Bill Field, Brian Farmer and Mick Hall.
Winning Fun Day team: Judi Lentelink, Sean Jewett and Jenny Chesterton
on Campo Europa were Jill Davies with a net 69, just edging Jenny Chesterton on handicap and David Bottomley with a net 72. Jill has dropped her handicap to 12.8 and David remains at 8.1.
It is supposed to be a golf competition that allows a throw on each hole with no penalty. We got the rules mixed up and played a slightly different game that REQUIRED a throw on all holes except par 3’s! Oops, should have consulted our Norwegian or one of our honorary Norwegians! The weather cooperated and the stories of hilarious throws added to the fun. Libby was the only one that managed to “throw in!” The winners, Bobo Syversen, Maddie Brooks, Les Wicks and Jill Davies managed 90 points and won on handicap over Louis Lentelink, Peter Penney, and guests Val Price and Simon Rivers.
It was played on Campo America on Tuesday, then Campo Asia on Thursday, and the Singles Finals on Campo Europa on Saturday. On Tuesday the format was foursomes and at the end of a hard fought day the Captains Team led by a score of 7 ½ to 4 ½ !
As you can see we had some equipment problems and had to improvise!
On Thursday the format shifted to Four Ball Better Ball and the Vice Captains team came storming back! As you can see from the smiling faces of the Vice Captains, they turned a 3 point deficit into a 2 point advantage. Note also that the equipment problems have been solved!
Sonya and Brian happy with the blue teams efforts on Day 2
Day 3 nearly didn’t happen, but a positive weather forecast from our Green Keeping staff encouraged us to make an effort and now we know who to go to for weather forecasts! Only a few sprinkles dampened the tremendous surge from the Captains Team! Final Score: Red team 24 ½ points Blue team 21 ½ points. The picture tells the story!
Final Results from La Cala Ryder Cup
After the golf the La Cala kitchen staff served up some excellent sausage and chips and then the trophy presentation and handing out of wine and golf ball prizes concluded the day.

It starts on Sunday October 26th with a Texas Scramble on Campo Europa! The sign-up forms will be sent to everyone with all the details of the week. For the Club Championships (Scratch and Stableford) it is the same as last year: to qualify for the top prize you must be Spanish Federated and have played 4 Tuesdays during the past year. Members or guests that are not Spanish Federated (or have not played 4 Tuesdays) are welcome to play and will be eligible for prizes if they provide a handicap certificate from their home club as per our Handicap Policy before the competition begins. There are still 3 more Tuesday competitions in October so if you are short, come join us!
If I play well on Tuesday and score 39 stableford points and then have a match (Knock-out, La Liga, or Friendly) before the competition results are posted, what handicap do I use?
Spanish Federation rules require a player to self adjust their handicap downwards if they have returned a score in a qualifying competition that has not yet been reflected in their playing handicap. For the purposes of self adjustment it should be presumed that there has been no adjustment in the ASC. Failure to self adjust would result in the player being disqualified for playing from a handicap higher than which they are entitled. It is not permissible though for a player to make an an upward adjust to their handicap.
If in any doubt as to the exact handicap adjustment to make please refer to the Captains.
The Driving Range is open for business! The hours are 8:30 am to 7:30 pm every day except on Wednesday the range will close at 6 pm and re-open at 9 am on Thursday morning to allow for maintenance.
Joan Stock has compiled some great photo albums through the years and has put 20 of them in the Sports Lounge for your viewing pleasure! They are in the cabinet just inside the door on the left and are in year order with the oldest at the top left. Stop by and catch up on some old memories. Thanks Joan!

Documents concerning the AGM are posted on the Club Notice Board, also extra proxy slips.
We apologise that website construction work has prevented posting of recent results from our Tuesday competitions. We are hoping to add these retro-actively once the work has been completed.
